So I'll stand
With arms high and heart abandoned
In awe of the One who gave it all
My soul Lord to You surrendered
All I am is Yours
- The Stand, Hillsong United
I love this song. Like most of Hillsong’s music, it just speaks right to where I’m at. Standing before God, arms wide and surrendered to Him, vulnerable and trusting, seeking Him always.
God: “Is that right, now…”
Me: “Oh hey, Dad! Well, sure! I love You so much. I give it all over to You because I trust You”
God: “Really. You give it ALL over to me”
Me: “Yep. All of it!”
(Vicki smiles proudly)
God: “You give me your health”
God: “You give me your career”
Me: “Uh..yes! All of it!”
God: “Your finances”
Me: “Well, I do try…”
God: “Your marriage? Your future?”
Me: “Just hold on a second”
God: “Your children?”
Me: “Wait, wait…”
God: “Have you given me your past?”
Following Jesus comes with a price. The cost is everything. All that you are, all that you have, all that you’ve been, all that you will be. Your riches, your gifts, your spouse, your children, your success, your time. The things we treasure the most, the things we work very hard to get and to protect. It’s no wonder surrendering all this to God is not easy.
But that’s not all we are called to give Him.
We also give Him our shame. Our guilt. Our fear and our insecurities. Our darkest secrets and our deepest wounds. We take all of our sin and we lay it at His feet, at the foot of the cross. And in return, we receive grace, mercy, forgiveness, love and peace. Freedom.
It’s a journey. It can be a day-to-day struggle, the act of being truly obedient and surrendering to our Father.
On those days when it’s just too hard, when carrying the baggage is deceptively comforting instead of genuinely suffocating, read the words of Jeremiah the prophet in the letter he wrote to those in exile, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity”
I'm choosing to surrender, to stand with arms lifted and heart open, ready to receive the gift of freedom.
