Love Like Christ
Hello Kensington Family!
In follow up to my last blog I wanted to bring you up to date with some of the amazing things happening in and through our local outreach as well as share some stories with you. For those of you who don’t know, we just finished hosting Safe Harbor and it was incredible! I had the chance to serve with so many new faces and reconnect with familiar ones as well! Moreover, I was completely humbled by how I saw volunteers love on and serve our guests this year! One story that comes to mind is an amazing volunteer that did an overnight shift (meaning from 8:30pm until 6:30am), then took a sink bath, got dressed in his Sunday best in preparation to serve on our Sunday volunteer team, only to find out we needed help loading a few large items onto the big Goodwill truck and jump back into action to help in his nice church clothes without hesitation. He went above and beyond the call to serve and did so in such a humble manner that I felt honored to be able to serve with him. It was such a reminder of what it means to serve from the heart and by way of Jesus’s example. It was incredible and inspiring!
There are so many more stories just like this, that make you take a step back and notice that God is really on the move in and through our church and beyond. The way we live out our faith I think says a lot about our relationship with Jesus and I’m often humbled by what I see amongst those that I have the opportunity to serve elbow to elbow with.
Another story that comes to mind is a gal that has fully stepped in to embrace our Kid’s Hope program and again has gone above and beyond in the way she is leading our mentors, loving on the school staff, always full of surprises, and loving me more than I deserve! This gal, Briana, while we were hosting Safe Harbor, she and I were going through an 8-week training course (her voluntarily) and she brought me coffee and a cookie just because. This might not be a big deal for everyone but to me it is something that I will never forget and something that I think shows the relationship Briana has with her Savior and how she is living out her faith. I had asked her to commit to this 2hr+ weekly training on top of a few more hours she was putting in at the school voluntarily, taking time away from her family and other things she could have been doing and yet I was rewarded and almost thanked for doing so. That, my friends, is loving people well. Not being asked, not being pushed, not being led, but out of your own intuition and with a heart that leads out of our faith and love for our Savior to love on others. She did not know it but I needed that cookie and, even more, that coffee. It was like a Jesus intervention! Matter of fact it was a Jesus intervention…because I was exhausted from Safe Harbor but in that moment my tank was beyond replenished and I felt like I could conquer the world from that one cup of mojo and act of kindness and love.
God is on the move my friends! I can see it unfolding and am so excited to be a part of it. We are in the midst of getting ready to take our first Kensington Traverse City international mission trip, stepping up our game on how we are partnering with our partner school, preparing to host our first adoption/foster conference, getting ready for our first Hope water run, and so much more! To think this is one small branch of the tree of our church that is growing is remarkable! Thank you for letting me be a part of it!
